Prodigy Math Game: Is It Free, How to Log In, and Is Membership Worth It?

What Prodigy Math is, what's free, what a Prodigy membership adds and costs, how students log in, and whether membership is worth it for parents.

On this page

Prodigy is a fantasy role-playing game where children answer maths questions to win battles, explore worlds and collect pets. Lots of schools use it, and lots of parents end up asking the same question: do we need to pay?

In this guide I’ll explain how Prodigy works, what’s free, what a membership adds, how students log in, and my honest view on whether membership is worth it.

What is Prodigy?

Prodigy Math is a game-based learning platform for grades 1 to 8. There’s also Prodigy English for grades 1 to 6. Children create a wizard, explore the game world and answer curriculum-aligned questions during battles. The questions adapt to each child’s level.

Prodigy says it’s free for teachers and schools. Teachers can set assignments and see reports, and the company is funded by optional parent memberships.

What’s free?

According to Prodigy, the free account includes:

  • the full maths and English learning content
  • all game zones and hundreds of quests
  • starter pets and hundreds of items to customise a wizard
  • parent reports

Children can learn just as much on the free version.

What does a Prodigy membership add?

Memberships mostly add game extras, not extra learning:

  • members-only areas, pets and gear
  • pet evolution and monthly in-game currency
  • extra parent tools such as goals, rewards and the option to adjust question difficulty

Prodigy says memberships make the game more exciting “without changing the educational experience”.

Price: Prodigy lists memberships from about $6.25 a month in the US, with higher tiers covering more games. Prices change and vary by country, so check Prodigy’s membership page.

How students log in to Prodigy

  1. Go to prodigygame.com (or open the Prodigy app) and choose to log in as a student.
  2. Enter your username and password.
  3. If your school uses Clever, ClassLink or Google Classroom, use that button instead. Prodigy supports one-click sign-in through them.

If your teacher gave you a class code, you’ll usually enter it when you first set up your account, which connects you to their class.

Forgot your details? Ask your teacher, who can see your username and reset your password. Parents can also help from the parent account.

Is a Prodigy membership worth it?

My take:

  • For learning: not needed. The maths and English questions are the same in the free version.
  • For motivation: some children love the extra pets and areas, and it keeps them practising.
  • Watch the pressure: the game shows members-only content, and some parents feel it nudges children to ask for a membership. Talk to your child about it.
  • Billing: memberships renew automatically. Prodigy says you can cancel any time from the parent account.

Tips for parents

  • Create a free parent account to link to your child and see their progress.
  • Set time limits like you would for any game.
  • Check that they’re answering questions, not just exploring the game world.
