Your teacher has given you a short code and said “join the class on Google Classroom”. It only takes a minute, as long as you’re signed in with the right account. That’s where most problems come from.
In this guide I’ll show you how to join with a class code, a link or an email invite, on a computer or phone, and how to fix the most common errors.
Before you start: use the right account
Google Classroom works with:
- a school account (Google Workspace for Education), usually ending in your school’s domain, like name@yourschool.edu
- a personal Google account, if your teacher is using Classroom that way
Most schools want you to use your school account. If you’re unsure which one to use, ask your teacher.
Join with a class code (computer)
- Go to classroom.google.com.
- Check you’re signed in with the right account. Click your profile picture at the top right to switch accounts.
- At the top, click the + (Join class).
- Enter the class code from your teacher.
- Click Join.
Google says class codes are 6 to 8 characters, made of letters and numbers, with no spaces or symbols. Type it exactly as shown, including capital letters.
Join with a class code (phone or tablet)
- Open the Google Classroom app (Android or iPhone/iPad).
- Make sure the right account is selected.
- Tap + and choose Join class.
- Enter the class code and tap Join.
Once you’ve joined on one device, you’re in the class on all your devices.
Join with a link or email invite
- Class link: click the link your teacher shared, sign in with the right account, and click Join.
- Email invite: open the invitation email or find the class card on classroom.google.com, then click Join.
Can’t join? Common fixes
“Class code not found” or the code doesn’t work
- Check the code again: length, letters, numbers and capitals.
- Make sure you’re signed in with the account your teacher expects.
- Ask your teacher to confirm the code. They can also reset it or send you an invite instead.
“You can’t use Classroom with this account”
- You’re probably signed in with the wrong account, often a personal Gmail instead of your school account. Sign out, then sign in with your school account.
“Your administrator hasn’t activated Classroom” or “This service has been disabled by your admin”
- Your school’s IT team controls this. Contact your school’s IT or help desk.
You lost the code
- You only need the code once. Ask your teacher to share it again, and check your email (including spam) in case it was sent there.
Tips for students
- Bookmark classroom.google.com so you always use the official site.
- Keep school and personal accounts separate. Use a separate browser profile for school if you share a computer.
- Turn on notifications in the app so you don’t miss assignments.
Tips for teachers
- Show the code and share an invite link so students can choose.
- If a code is shared outside your class, reset it in the class settings.
- Students joining from different schools or personal accounts may be blocked by your school’s settings, so check with your IT team.
Many teachers pair Classroom with interactive tools. See my guides on how to use Pear Deck and Kahoot vs Gimkit vs Blooket vs Wayground.
