Janitor AI is one of the most searched AI chat platforms of the last two years. People often misspell it (“jenitor AI”, “janior AI”), but they are all looking for the same thing: a site where you chat with AI characters that other users have created.

In this guide I’ll explain what Janitor AI actually is, how its chat models work, what you can use for free, and the safety and privacy points I’d want any reader to understand before signing up.

What is Janitor AI?

Janitor AI is a text-based roleplay and storytelling platform run by JanitorAI Inc. It launched in 2023. Instead of one general assistant like ChatGPT, it hosts a large public library of user-created characters, each with its own personality, backstory and opening scene. You pick a character (or create your own) and chat with it like an interactive story.

It is available on the web, iOS and Android.

Important: Janitor AI’s own terms say it is a platform for adults (18+). It allows mature roleplay between adult characters, so it isn’t suitable for children or teenagers. More on this in the safety section below.

How does Janitor AI work?

Janitor AI is the front end: the character library, chat interface and settings. The actual replies come from a large language model (LLM), the same kind of technology behind ChatGPT. If you’re curious about the basics, I explain them in how ChatGPT generates responses.

You can power your chats in three ways:

OptionWhat it isCost
JanitorLLM (JLLM)Janitor’s own hosted model, used by defaultFree
Proxy / API keyConnect an outside AI provider (for example OpenRouter or DeepSeek) with your own API keyYou pay that provider, not Janitor
janitor+ RouterPaid add-on (launched July 2026) giving access to third-party models through a built-in walletPay per use, subscribers only

The free JanitorLLM has a smaller memory (context window) than many paid models, so long chats can “forget” earlier details. That’s the main reason people connect a proxy.

How to get started

  1. Go to the official site at janitorai.com or download the official app.
  2. Create an account and confirm your email.
  3. Browse the character library, or select Create character to write your own name, description and opening message.
  4. Start a chat. Janitor uses JanitorLLM by default, so you don’t need any API key to begin.
  5. Optional: under API settings, you can connect a proxy if you want a different model.

Is Janitor AI free?

Yes, mostly. Chatting with public characters using JanitorLLM is free. You only pay if you:

  • subscribe to janitor+, or
  • connect a paid model through a proxy or the Router.

If you use a proxy, the costs and data rules are set by that provider. Check their pricing page before you add a payment method.

Is Janitor AI safe?

This is the question I’d think about most carefully.

Age rules. Janitor’s terms state the platform is intended only for users aged 18 and over, and accounts suspected of belonging to minors can be banned. Strict age verification only applies in some countries (such as Australia and Brazil); elsewhere, age is self-declared at sign-up.

Content. Mature roleplay between adult characters is allowed on the website. On the mobile apps, NSFW content is off by default.

Privacy. Janitor says it doesn’t sell personal data, and that private chats aren’t shared for advertising. However, its privacy policy says chats may be used for moderation and to improve its AI systems. If you connect a proxy, your messages also go to that outside provider, under its own terms.

My practical safety tips:

  • Don’t share real personal details (full name, address, workplace, photos) in any AI chat.
  • Use a strong, unique password and turn on two-factor login where available.
  • Treat the characters as fiction. They’re designed to feel personal, so take breaks if a chat starts to feel more like a relationship than a story.
  • Only use the official site or app. Copycat “Janitor AI” sites and APKs exist.

A note for parents

If your child mentions Janitor AI, it’s worth a calm conversation. The platform is adults-only, and public safety guidance on AI character apps (such as the Welsh Government’s Hwb guide) highlights two main risks for young people: inappropriate content and emotional dependence on always-available characters. You can block adult-rated apps with Screen Time on Apple devices or parental controls in Google Play.

Why is Janitor AI not working?

Common causes include:

  • High traffic or outages on Janitor’s servers. Wait and try again later.
  • Proxy errors. If you connected an API key, check your balance, model name and key with that provider.
  • Browser issues. Clear your cache or try another browser. My guide to clearing Facebook cache walks through browser cache clearing too.

Janitor AI alternatives

  • Character.AI: the best-known character chat app, with stricter content filters.
  • General AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, if you want creative writing help without character roleplay.
  • Multi-model apps like ChatGOT, if you want to compare several AI models in one place.
