Kami is a PDF and document annotation tool that many schools use with Google Classroom. Your teacher uploads a worksheet, and you write, type, highlight and draw on it in Kami, then turn it in.
If you’ve been asked to “open it with Kami” and you’re not sure how, this guide walks you through it, using Kami’s own help guides.
What you need
- your school Google account
- the Kami extension for Chrome or Edge (your school may have installed it already)
- on an iPad or tablet, where the extension can’t be installed, you use the Open with Kami link instead
How to open a Kami assignment in Google Classroom
- Open Google Classroom and go to the Classwork tab.
- Click the Kami assignment.
- Under Your work, click the file.
- If you only see a preview, click Open with Kami in the top-right corner. On an iPad, tap the Open with Kami link.
Your teacher decides how the file is shared. Usually each student gets their own copy. Sometimes the whole class shares one copy, or the file is view-only.
How to complete the worksheet
Use the toolbar in Kami to:
- type text boxes onto the page
- draw or write with a stylus
- highlight, underline or strike through text
- add comments, shapes and images
How to turn in a Kami assignment
- Click Turn in in the top-right corner of Kami.
- Click Turn In again to confirm.
- The button changes to Unsubmit, which means your work has been submitted.
If you need to make changes, click Unsubmit, edit, then turn it in again before the deadline.
Kami not working? Try this
- Check the extension. Make sure the Kami extension is installed and turned on in Chrome or Edge.
- Use your school account. Sign out of personal Google accounts if you’re signed into several.
- Look for Open with Kami if the file opens as a plain preview.
- On an iPad, use the Open with Kami link from your teacher.
- Refresh the page or try again in a new tab.
- Ask your teacher to check the assignment’s share setting if you can only view the file.
If your class uses Google Classroom and you’re new to it, see how to join Google Classroom with a class code.
Is Kami free?
Kami has a free Basic plan, and many schools buy a school or district licence that unlocks more tools for teachers and students. If a feature is locked, your school’s plan probably doesn’t include it.
