Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, is now much easier for students to reach. Since August 2026, many students see a Gemini tab right inside Google Classroom, often without their school having made a fresh decision about it.
In this guide I’ll explain where students can use Gemini, the age rules, the free student plan, what happens to your data, and how to use it to learn rather than to cut corners.
What changed in 2026
- Gemini in Google Classroom. Google announced a Gemini tab for Classroom in August 2026. According to EdWeek, it opened to K-12 students of all ages, where before it was only on for students aged 18 and over. Students can use it to make flashcards, practice quizzes and study guides, and to get help with maths and writing.
- On by default, in some schools. The tab appears wherever a school had already allowed students to use the Gemini app or Gemini’s notebook tool. If a school had switched Gemini off for students, it stays off.
- Schools can turn it off. Google says administrators can switch it off at any time, by group, in the Admin console.
- New study features. Google has since added study notebooks (September 2026) and a student hub (October 2026). Both are controlled by the school’s admin settings.
EdWeek reported that several schools were caught off guard and had to decide quickly whether to allow it.
Can you use Gemini? The age rules
| Account | Who can use Gemini |
|---|---|
| Personal Google Account | Generally 13 and over (or the minimum age in your country, which is higher in parts of Europe). In the US and many other countries, parents can turn on Gemini for younger children through Family Link |
| School account (Google Workspace for Education) | Depends on what your school has switched on for your year group |
Rules differ between countries and change often. If you’re unsure, ask your school what’s enabled for you. Parents should check Google’s Family Link settings.
The free Gemini student plan
Google is offering eligible US college students aged 18 and over a free year of Google’s paid AI plan, with higher Gemini limits and extra storage. Google’s student page says you must redeem it by 31 December 2026, add a payment method, and re-verify your eligibility each year. After the free year it renews at $19.99 a month unless you cancel, so set a reminder.
School-age students don’t qualify for this offer.
What happens to your chats?
- School accounts: Google’s education privacy information says Gemini chats on Workspace for Education accounts aren’t used to train its AI models.
- Personal accounts: consumer privacy settings apply. Check Gemini Apps Activity in your Google Account to see and control what’s saved.
Either way, don’t paste in personal details you wouldn’t want stored.
Good ways to use Gemini for school
- Make your own revision materials: “Turn my notes on the water cycle into 10 flashcards.”
- Quiz yourself: “Ask me five questions on fractions, one at a time, and tell me if I’m right.”
- Ask for a simpler explanation: “Explain how vaccines work like I’m 12.”
- Use Guided Learning (where available), which walks you through a problem step by step instead of giving the answer.
- Get feedback, not a rewrite: “What’s unclear in this paragraph? Don’t rewrite it.”
Common Sense Media has pointed out that it’s easy to switch out of Guided Learning, and that Gemini will write a whole essay if you ask. So it’s up to you to use it to learn.
What to avoid
- Handing in Gemini’s writing as your own. Follow your school’s AI policy, and say how you used AI when that’s allowed.
- Trusting facts without checking. Gemini can get things wrong. Check against your textbook or class notes.
- Using it as a friend or counsellor. If something’s worrying you, talk to a trusted adult.
The same principles apply to every AI tool. My guide on how to use ChatGPT for school has more prompts, and if your work is ever wrongly flagged, read are AI detectors accurate?
Tips for parents and teachers
- Find out what’s switched on. Ask your school or district IT team whether the Gemini tab is enabled, and for which year groups.
- Agree on rules for when AI is allowed in homework.
- Encourage study-style use such as quizzes and flashcards rather than finished answers.
- Know what parents can see. For school accounts, Google doesn’t currently offer parents a view of children’s Gemini chats.
