Gauth AI Review: Is the Homework Helper Accurate and Safe?

Gauth AI review: how the photo homework helper works, free limits, Gauth Plus price, accuracy problems, ByteDance ownership and safer alternatives.

On this page

Gauth (formerly Gauthmath) is a homework-help app: you snap a photo of a question and it gives you a step-by-step AI answer. It’s popular with maths and science students, and many parents want to know whether it’s safe and worth paying for.

In this review I’ll explain how Gauth works, what’s free and what isn’t, how accurate it really is, and what to know about its ownership. I’ve based it on independent reviews from 2026; I haven’t been paid by Gauth.

What is Gauth?

Gauth is owned by ByteDance, the company behind TikTok. It launched in 2020 as Gauthmath and was renamed Gauth in 2024. You can type or photograph a question, and Gauth returns a worked solution you can ask follow-up questions about. It covers maths plus subjects such as physics, chemistry, biology and writing, and there’s a browser extension as well as the phone app.

Gauth price: free vs Plus

Gauth’s free tier gives you a limited number of AI answers per day. Independent reviews say Gauth doesn’t publish the exact cap.

Plan Price (US, 2026 reviews)
Free $0, limited answers per day
Gauth Plus monthly $9.99 first month, then about $11.99/month
Gauth Plus yearly About $99.99/year
Live tutor add-on About $19.99/month extra

Watch the free trial. One 2026 review reports that the 3-day trial needs a payment method up front and turns into a paid plan on day 4, with some users saying they were charged before cancelling and couldn’t get a refund. If you start a trial, set a reminder to cancel. On iPhone, cancel in Settings › your name › Subscriptions; on Android, in Google Play › Payments & subscriptions.

How accurate is Gauth?

Gauth advertises a solve rate of around 95%, but that figure comes from Gauth’s own marketing. Independent reviewers say:

  • it’s strongest on algebra, arithmetic, basic geometry and formula-based high-school physics and chemistry
  • it’s weaker on advanced calculus, 3D geometry, multi-step word problems and essay-style answers
  • it sometimes makes “silent” errors, where the final answer is right but a step in the working is wrong

So treat every answer as a draft to check, not as the truth. If you copy a wrong step into your homework, your teacher will spot it.

Is Gauth safe?

There’s no reported Gauth-specific data breach. The main concern reviewers raise is ownership: because Gauth is a ByteDance product, it sits under the same questions as TikTok about data and Chinese law. Gauth was briefly removed from US app stores in January 2025 during the TikTok ruling and then returned.

For parents, I’d suggest:

  • check the app’s privacy settings and age rating in the App Store or Google Play
  • don’t let children sign up with their main email if a school or family email works
  • talk about how they use it: checking work is fine, copying answers isn’t

Is using Gauth cheating?

It depends on how you use it. Checking your own answer, or getting unstuck on a step and then doing the rest yourself, is close to using a worked example in a textbook. Copying answers into graded homework usually breaks school rules, and it won’t help you in a test. If your school has a policy on AI tools, follow it.

Gauth alternatives

  • Photomath (owned by Google): strong for maths step-by-steps. See my Photomath review.
  • Khanmigo: Khan Academy’s AI tutor, which guides you rather than giving answers. See my Khanmigo guide.
  • Brainly: community answers plus AI. See my Brainly review.
  • Microsoft Math Solver: free.

My verdict

Gauth is fast and handy for checking routine maths and science questions. But its accuracy drops on harder problems, the trial and billing need care, and some families will prefer an app that isn’t owned by ByteDance. If you use it, use it to learn the method, not to skip the work.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gauth free? Yes, with a daily limit on AI answers. Gauth Plus removes most limits.

Who owns Gauth? ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok.

Is Gauth always right? No. Reviewers report wrong steps and wrong answers, especially on harder problems.

How do I cancel Gauth Plus? Cancel through the store you paid with: Apple subscriptions in iPhone Settings, or Google Play subscriptions on Android.
