QuillBot is best known as a paraphrasing tool: paste in a sentence and it rewrites it. It also has a grammar checker, summarizer, citation generator and AI detector. That makes it useful, but it’s also one of the tools teachers worry about most.
In this guide I’ll explain what QuillBot’s free and Premium plans include, when using it is fine and when it crosses the line, and how to use it without getting into trouble.
QuillBot free vs Premium

| Citation generator | Yes | Yes |
| AI detector | Yes | Yes |
| Plagiarism checker | No | Yes |
| Price | $0 | About $19.95/month, or about $99.95/year |
Premium prices come from independent checks in 2026 (CASRAI checked in August 2026). QuillBot runs frequent promotions and prices vary by country, so check the live price before you buy.
Is using QuillBot cheating?
It depends on what you paraphrase and your school’s rules.
Usually fine:
- rewording your own clumsy sentence to make it clearer
- checking grammar and spelling
- generating a citation in APA or MLA (then checking it)
- summarizing a long article so you can decide whether to read it
Usually not fine:
- running someone else’s text through QuillBot so it looks original. That’s still plagiarism, even if a checker no longer flags it
- paraphrasing AI-written text to hide that it came from AI
- using it on a task where your teacher has banned AI or paraphrasing tools
As CASRAI’s guide puts it, rewording a source to disguise its wording is plagiarism whatever the output looks like. And paraphrased ideas still need a citation.
Can Turnitin detect QuillBot?
Turnitin says its English AI detector has a category for text that was likely AI-generated and then changed by a paraphrasing tool such as QuillBot. So “AI text + QuillBot” is exactly what it’s looking for. Read more in Does Turnitin detect AI? and why so-called humanizers don’t solve the problem in Why AI humanizers don’t work.
Is QuillBot’s AI detector reliable?
It’s fine for a rough first look at your own draft, but don’t treat its score as proof. AI detectors can wrongly flag human writing, which I explain in Are AI detectors accurate?
How to use QuillBot safely for school
- Read your course’s AI and tools policy. Some schools ask you to declare paraphrasing tools.
- Write first, polish second. Use QuillBot on your own draft, not on sources.
- Read every suggestion. Paraphrasers can change meaning or make sentences vague.
- Cite everything you borrowed, even if you’ve reworded it.
- Keep your version history in Google Docs or Word so you can show your process. Tools like Grammarly Authorship can help too.
Is QuillBot Premium worth it?
For most students, no. The free plan covers occasional rewording, grammar and citations. Premium is mainly useful if you write a lot and want the plagiarism checker or longer paraphrases. If your school gives you another writing tool for free, use that first.
Frequently asked questions
Is QuillBot free? Yes. The free plan includes a 125-word paraphraser with two modes, grammar checking, a summarizer, citations and an AI detector.
Can teachers tell if you use QuillBot? Sometimes. Paraphrased text can read unnaturally, and Turnitin looks for AI text changed by paraphrasing tools.
Is QuillBot plagiarism? The tool itself isn’t, but using it to disguise someone else’s words is.
Does QuillBot have a plagiarism checker? Yes, in Premium.
