History Of Homer Electric Association:

The company was originally founded by a group of local businessmen who wanted to bring electricity to their community. The idea came about after one of the founders visited his brother in Fairbanks, where he saw how easy it was for people there to have access to power. He returned home with the goal of bringing electricity to Homer so that everyone could enjoy its benefits.

After several years of hard work, they were able to raise enough money through donations and loans from local banks so that they could start building their own power plant–and on May 1st, 1949 (May Day!), Homer Electric Association officially became operational!
