How POH is Moving the Power Needle for Display Screens with the Help of PoE Media Converters

Power over Ethernet (PoE) has revolutionized the operation of networks. Not only has this technology changed how we can transmit power and data, but with the advent of PoE media converters, we can now simplify the installation process while increasing the scalability and flexibility of many different types of media systems. Of course, with advancement comes greater resource needs. However, when powering advanced media systems that incorporate video, some of the older PoE standards, like 802.3af, may not supply enough power.

Enter Power over HDBase-T™ (POH)—a game-changing technology capable of delivering up to 100W of DC power over four pairs of Ethernet cable in conjunction with video signals. POH provides more than power to support devices with higher energy requirements on PoE-enabled networks, such as high-performance cameras and display screens.

What is PoE?

PoE is a networking technology that enables Ethernet cables to deliver both power and data to connected devices. This technology uses unused twisted wire pairs within standard Cat5e (or better) Ethernet cables to bring electricity alongside connectivity.

The advantages of incorporating PoE into a network include:

  • Increased reliability.
  • Cost savings.
  • Decluttering.
  • Easier upgrades.
  • Centralized power management.

PoE also comes equipped with safety features that prevent overload and ensure proper delivery to connected devices (PDs) such as PoE-enabled IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points.

How are PoE and POH different?

Integrated into the HDBase-T standard, POH is based on and is backward compatible with the IEEE’s 802.3at PoE+ standard. Unlike PoE, which only transmits power and data, the HDBase-T™ standard can send multiple signals, including power, data, audio, video, and control signals—all over a single cable. This technology is known as 5Play™.

While POH uses the same cabling infrastructure as PoE, it delivers more power than standard PoE and is optimized for a higher bandwidth across a distance of up to 100 meters. This feature makes it an excellent option for devices like high-end video displays that require extra power over longer distances to operate.

What is POH Power used for?

POH is specifically designed to streamline and enhance the installation and operation of high-end audiovisual (AV) networks. Delivering electrical power and a suite of other signals (5Play™), POH offers a practical way to power equipment such as display screens in scenarios where running separate power cables may be costly, inconvenient, or aesthetically undesirable. This can be particularly useful for wall-mounted displays, ceiling-mounted projectors, and devices located in hard-to-reach areas.

POH can provide ample power for video displays in various settings, including airports, sports arenas, hospitals, hotels, entertainment venues, educational institutions, etc.

Digital Signage

Public venues, retail spaces, and corporate lobbies often use many displays, each with intricate power and signal distribution. POH simplifies installation and operation processes by allowing a single cable to power a display while simultaneously delivering high-resolution video content and control signals. This is especially helpful in remote locations and during reconfiguration efforts.

Broadcasting

In broadcasting studios, POH can power digital studio cameras, on-set monitors, intercom systems, distribution amplifiers, and other equipment with fewer cables for a cleaner floor. It can power monitors, smaller cameras, and communication devices in the field for remote production. POH can significantly reduce the cables needed to run when on location, making deployment and tear-down processes faster, more efficient, and safer.

Conference Centers

POH streamlines connecting equipment often used in conference rooms and collaboration spaces, such as projectors, interactive white boards, and control systems. Aside from generally decluttering and fostering a more professional environment, POH simplifies setting up for presentations, interactive sessions, and video conferencing.

Hospitality

Hotel rooms can provide seamless entertainment experiences by connecting devices via POH. It can also be beneficial for presentations held in hotel meeting rooms.

Healthcare

Hospitals and healthcare settings prioritize seamless operations and require clean environments, using POH to connect and power medical imaging displays and other AV equipment. POH improves patient care, including diagnosis accuracy, by ensuring precise and reliable medical feeds and transmitting high-resolution images.

Transportation

Information displays, digital signs, and interactive kiosks in airports, bus depots, and train stations powered by POH provide real-time updates on arrivals, departures, delays, and other information. POH makes it possible to mount and operate these devices remotely and in hard-to-reach places.

Education

POH simplifies connecting interactive white boards and projectors to computers and AV equipment in classroom settings and lecture halls, facilitating high-quality video transmission to large displays. This type of setup can help bring together multiple teaching technologies, enhancing the learning environment by reducing visual clutter and potential tripping hazards.

Industrial Networks

POH can power Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), robotic arms, and the unique types of sensors used in industrial settings to monitor environmental conditions like temperature, pressure, and proximity. Manufacturing facilities are unique facilities that may require devices to be installed in remote and difficult-to-reach locations. POH makes this possible, all while making the work environment safer.

Delivering power alongside multiple data signals over a single cable, POH simplifies installing and operating high-end audiovisual systems in various settings. As AV technologies evolve and the demand for streamlined and high-performance solutions increases, POH remains a crucial enabler for modern multimedia deployments, especially display screens and video walls.
